John Heino was born and raised in the Duluth area. From an early age he was inspired by the rich beauty of the region’s forests and lakes. His appreciation of natural forms has grown through photographic adventures from Cape Cod to Oahu and Key West to Northern Manitoba.
As an art student at UMD with an emphasis in photography, John learned a lifelong lesson. Don’t take the picture, let the picture take you. While he went on to earn an M.A. Degree in management from the College of St. Scholastica and build a successful career in business, he returned to his passion for photography in 2004.
John continues to be drawn to the endless variety of images created as nature does its work—wind, waves, erosion, growth, decay. He is especially attracted to fleeting imagery that will be gone in an instant or few hours at best like fractal patterns in the sand washed away by the next tide.
“I love shooting in these beautiful settings,” John says. “And there’s a special satisfaction in preserving an image no one else would see otherwise.”
John is a member of the Duluth Art Institute Board of Directors and served as co-chair of the 2008 Art Works Conference and Creative Economy Showcase. He will next exhibit his work in November of 2009 at the Red Mug in Superior.
