Featured Artist for August and September: Arna Rennan

Artist Statement
I see brush strokes everywhere. In the sky, leaves, rock, water, in the structure and contours of faces, clumps of hair, you name it. Texture is pigment Colors are warm or cool instead of tonal. I paint directly from nature to plug into its electricity which then translates into more life or adrenaline into my paintings.
All painting is an abstract process of organizing the architecture for eye movement, pushing or balancing relationships of color, shapes, sizes and variation. The painting is then clothed and defined by greater or lesser recognizable detail and intent. The success of these underlying characteristics are what make a painting worth looking at over and over again.
With having painted for a number of years, I am developing more patience and attention for subtle qualities. I have been pushing myself to include more texture, depth and verve in my brush strokes to achieve the sensual qualities of paint. I constantly ask myself if the image has real presence or whether it is only an idea not fully materialized.
As passionate about painting as many artists are, a friend once said, “But you know, we really don’t change the world much.” That is true, unfortunately. But having chosen to paint local images, I have been able to enjoy the satisfaction of hearing people say, “I saw something I thought you should paint!“ There are many things that shouldn’t be changed, just appreciated more.

  Biography
Arna was born in Duluth in 1954 by parents that had recently immigrated from Norway. The walls in their home were filled with paintings by her maternal grandfather and uncles. She naturally identified with them and their paintings reinforced her own desires. At age 12, she attended her first painting class at the Duluth Art Institute. The Tweed Museum was almost in her front yard, so she made frequent visits at a young age. Other early experiences that meant a lot to her were classes with Mel Kumsha at East High School, and classes with Jerry Callenger.
Benefiting from her status as a duel citizen, Arna was accepted into the National Academy of Art in Oslo Norway at age 19. There she studied painting under Alf-Jorgen Aas, who was an abstract expressionist heavily schooled in the approach to painting of Cezanne. She also studied printmaking with Zdenka Rusova from Czechoslovakia. She received numerous grants, the first being towards independent study in Paris where she spent four months visiting and revisiting the major museums and galleries.
Throughout the 13 years Arna lived in Oslo, she exhibited extensively in collective and solo shows and is represented in the Norwegian Cultural Council’s collection. Besides working on her art, she has done various part time jobs such as teaching painting and drawing and was chair person for the Young Artist’s Association in Oslo.
Arna currently lives in woods of Normanna Township with her family. She balances family life, music and painting along with other involvements. She recently became director of the North End Arts Council in Superior.
